In parallel with my work on the dynamics of the urban and conducting workshops – often with students – I have also enjoyed designing and building my own furniture, frequently in close collaboration with my brother, Niels Brandt. Working with highly skilled craftspeople is my favourite part of the design process, where deep knowledge of materials and construction methods meets formal and functional concepts.
The design is often quite simple in itself, allowing the use of the shelves, for example, to become a central part of the overall expression. In that sense, it reflects my belief that the urban should be a simple framework – open to appropriation and the personal touch of its users, evolving over time. This is why I used a drawing of my bookshelves as a sketch to illustrate the project Fun City – see below.
